Instead of writing a full-length review, I’ve decided to create short reviews for films I watch that are currently in theatres to serve more as recommendations as to whether or not you should see them. Given that A Quiet Place: Part II is the first movie I’ve seen in theatres since Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker a year and a half ago, I’m starting here.
Let me preface by saying that I was a big fan of A Quiet Place and the tense and visually striking atmosphere that it created. With hardly any dialogue, it perfected not only an intense pace but also the cinematic rule of ‘show, don’t tell’.
While I don’t like A Quiet Place: Part II as much as the first one, I think it’s a worthy successor. It keeps a lot of what was good about the first film (the intensity, the focus on visual storytelling, genuinely frightening moments and villains), but obviously doesn’t have as much world-building so the set-up portion of the film, while still good, isn’t quite as good as the first’s. It also changes the structure up a bit; the end sequence of the first film was where most of the action was concentrated, and went on for probably about thirty minutes. The second film has the action spread throughout the film more and the end action sequence isn’t nearly as long. It’s a good structural change to keep the first half of the movie more interesting, now that we don’t have all the world building to focus on.
Basically, as far as recommendations go, I would say: if you liked the first movie, watch this one. If you didn’t like the first movie, I doubt you’re even reading this to begin with, but this isn’t going to change your mind on the series.
Recommendation: Watch
