Black Widow
Spoiler Free
After two years, I finally got to see another Marvel film in theatres. That alone gave me enough reason to be excited to watch Black Widow, even though I didn’t have high hopes for the film. However, I was actually pleasantly surprised.
The film earns a lot of points for the relationship they build up between Natasha and Yelena; the chemistry between the two of them provides a lot of the film’s best moments, and most of the best jokes. They kept the movie feeling grounded. Unlike some of the lesser Marvel films, it felt like we were watching a movie about real people, largely because of these two and the banter they have between them. Admittedly, we get less of this as the film goes on, which is why the third act is probably the weakest of the film, as it kind of drags on too long.
My only substantial complaint with the movie is Taskmaster, who felt very under-utilized. Taskmaster doesn’t really do anything except have a couple of action scenes, and those are really good because they make excellent use of Taskmaster’s powers, and that’s kind of disappointing because I feel like the character had more potential.
All in all, Black Widow doesn’t rank as one of the MCU’s best films (though doing that is a pretty difficult feet), but it also doesn’t rank as one of the worst. There were quite a few movies in the MCU that I could name immediately after walking out of the theatre that rank significantly under Black Widow.
So, I’m glad I watched the film in theatres, but if you’re not as big of a Marvel fan as me, want to save money or don’t want to go to theatres still, Black Widow will be free on Disney Plus on October 6th. Black Widow is a good film, but if you have the patience (and obviously a Disney Plus subscription) then it wouldn’t be that long of a wait for free access.
Also, as a brief preview: because of this movie, I’m planning on doing my next full length review for Iron Man 2, Black Widow’s first appearance.
Recommendation: Watch
