The Tomorrow War
Spoiler Free
Amazon’s recent decision to up its presence in terms of original movies and series has given us quite a few good series, but their movie track record has been a lot less stellar, at least from my experience. Unfortunately, the Tomorrow War lives up to that trend. I was not expecting great things from this film, but given the rarity of new releases over the past year, I watched the film less than a day after it was released on Prime Video. However, even my meager expectations weren’t met.
Early in the film, we’re presented with the idea of the soldiers in the film just being ordinary people plucked from 2023 and sent to the future to fight in this war, but this idea is never really capitalized on. There’s very little focus on the ‘regular’ people, and the every-man aspect of the story was one of the only things keeping this film grounded and relatable. When it veered away from that idea, it just became another generic, sci-fi/war movie about the human race being vastly overwhelmed by an attacking alien force that is far more powerful. The pacing of the movie is also pretty awful, as it feels almost like it has a four-act structure. About an hour and forty minutes into the film, there’s what feels like a final action scene set-piece, and then there’s an extra half hour of movie afterwards that shifts gears and goes in a different direction. This ‘fourth’ act is also painful to watch, with the movie constantly calling back to seemingly unrelated and random things that were said in the first act to resolve conflicts. Since this is spoiler free, I can’t go into details, but trust me when I say it’s stupid.
In terms of recommendations, first of all it’s only available on Prime Video, so if you don’t have Amazon Prime you can’t watch it (and it definitely isn’t worth subscribing to watch this). But even if you do, there’s dozens of better movies free on there that you could be watching instead.
Recommendation: Don’t Watch
