Top 10 Underrated Movies
For this list, I’m going to be primarily focusing on movies that I like that are generally regarded as being bad. For the most part, I’m not going to be looking at movies that people like, but which I just like more. Also, as a side note, I’m not saying I think all of these movies are masterpieces, but I think all of these are unfairly hated and don’t get the credit they deserve.
Finally, the ordering of this list isn’t super strict, but I generally tried to sort them based on the biggest difference between what I think and what other people think, so that doesn’t necessarily mean #5 is a better movie than #10 for example.
10. Thor (2011)
I don’t know that this is a movie people necessarily dislike, but it generally seems to place near the bottom of people’s MCU rankings which I think is crazy. Maybe it’s partially nostalgia talking, but I think Thor still holds up as a good origin story film and another solid entry into the MCU.
9. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
This would be higher on the list, except I do kind of understand why people disliked this movie, especially if they watched the theatrical cut instead of the Ultimate Edition. There’s a lot of problems with the movie, and it certainly didn’t live up to all the hype it got, but I still think there’s plenty to like about this movie.
8. Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian (2005 and 2008)
I’m including two here solely because I don’t know if people liked the first one or not. I’ve heard conflicting takes on it, so I included Prince Caspian just to make sure my list retained some credibility. I think Narnia 1 was a great adaptation of the book and there’s honestly very little I’d change about. Prince Caspian wasn’t as good, and did have some problems, but it was still a solid fantasy/action film and improved on quite a few aspects of the book.
7. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
Aside from Goldeneye, the Pierce Brosnan Bond films don’t get a lot of respect. I understand why that was the case for The World is Not Enough and even more so for Die Another Day, but I think Tomorrow Never Dies is a great entry into the Bond franchise. It’s got the perfect tone for a Bond film, being just over-the-top enough to be fun, but not so much that it begins to feel like a parody of itself. I understand that’s a matter of personal preference, but that’s most of the tone I look for in a Bond film (in general).
6. Jurassic Park 3 (2001)
I don’t understand all the hate directed towards this film. Obviously, it’s nowhere near as good as the original, but it makes for a better sequel than the Lost World (or Fallen Kingdom). This movie doesn’t have the pretentious tone of its predecessor, and has a level of self-awareness that makes it entertaining. It doesn’t try to have some deeper message that it doesn’t earn; it’s just a fun, 90-minute movie about people trying to survive on an island of dinosaurs. It doesn’t have all the themes of the original film (such as the importance of not interfering with nature), but it also doesn’t betray those themes, so even hardcore Jurassic Park fans can enjoy this film if they’re fine with some lightweight entertainment.
5. Daredevil (2003)
Okay, this movie isn’t that great (and has gotten worse since the release of the Netflix series), but it’s nowhere near as bad as people say it is. I hear it compared to the original Ghost Rider film, which is completely unfair. Daredevil has some dumb moments, but there’s also a lot to like here. There’s some good action and the characters (for the most part) display genuine emotions and have understandable motivations.
4. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
This film wasn’t necessarily reviled, but it seems to always be held up as one of the franchise’s weaker films, which I whole-heartedly disagree with. Since I wrote a full-length review of this movie already, I won’t go into all the details, but I thought it was a great take on Spider-Man’s origin and took an interesting look at Peter Parker’s character.
3. Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013)
I don’t understand how this film keeps getting called one of Star Trek’s worst films. Even the most basic look at this film (even if you hated the alternate Kelvin timeline) surely places it over the Final Frontier, Insurrection and Nemesis (if not more). However, I think this is a genuinely great movie with good characters and action. The ending suffers from some plot-holes, and this one didn’t quite live up to the original, but I still think this film is a lot of fun.
2. Man of Steel (2013)
Ironically, I didn’t know people didn’t like this film until about a year ago. Given that it’s the whole reason I started this blog, I had to include it.
1. Star Wars Episode 2 – Attack of the Clones
If you read my review for this film, this won’t be a surprise. I think this is a great film, even ranking pretty high amongst its fellow Star Wars movies. It has an interesting story, great action and a lot of really compelling character development. While people have tried to shred this movie, virtually all of the criticisms I’ve heard feel more like small nit-picks and just seem to ignore all the great moments in this movie.
